The nearest town to Mazzaforte is Umbertide.  It's not a hill town, it's a valley town alongside the Tiber
that was badly knocked about during the second world war.  There are some historic parts remaining,
but it's not a picture-postcard medieval treasure.  Interestingly, this is a plus for a local town.  It's not
full of tourists, you don't have to park kilometres away in order to walk into the centre, and on
Wednesdays, the market has everything you could wish for in terms of seasonal produce.
