Mazzaforte is in a very convenient location above the hamlet of Molino Vitelli in Northern Umbria on the
border with Tuscany, close to the town of Umbertide.  The E45 is the major highway running
north-south through Umbria and from the closest exit, it takes about fifteen minutes to reach the
house.  The nearest international airport is Perugia (40 minutes).  Airports in Rome (south) and Pisa
(north) are roughly equidistant; two-and-a-half hours away by car.
Location
The area around Mazzaforte is known as L' Alte Valle del Tevere (The Upper
Valley of the Tiber) and our nearest town is UMBERTIDE, which is an
attractive little place 8 km away.  The closest village shops where you can buy
groceries are in Niccone, 3 kms east of Molino Vitelli, or in Spedalicchio, 3 kms
west.  In Umbertide there are supermarkets and many other shops.

Mazzaforte is located in the Niccone valley.  The river is a tributary of the
Tiber and flows from west to east.  At the head of the valley, west beyond
Mercatale, two winding roads take you over the hills, either to Lake Trasimeno
or to Cortona.  Exploring the local countryside and the small villages in this
bucolic valley is an absolute pleasure at any time of year.

There are many seasonal events and festivals to be enjoyed in the
surrounding towns and you can check dates for these events if you follow
the town website links on the SIGHTSEEING page of this site.  Within easy
driving distance lie Assisi, Perugia, Arezzo, Montepulciano, etc.
