An extremely beautiful Tuscan hill town
to the west of Mazzaforte,
Montepulciano is perhaps most famous
for the production of Vino Nobile di
Montepulciano, one of Italy's great wines.
The lesser, but still good, Rosso di
Montepulciano, is also from here. There
are about 50 producers of Vino Nobile,
several of whom have cellars within the
city walls where you can taste and buy
the wines on offer.
You can't enter the town by car, so park
in one of several car parks below the city
walls and walk in through the Porta al
Prata. The main street, known as the
Corsa wends its way up to the highest
point of the town, where just below the
fortress, you will find the Piazza Grande -
the main square. Along the way there
are some wonderful buildings to admire
and plenty of interesting shops and
cafes. There are also some outstanding
views out over the Val di Chiana and the
distant Monti della Totana.
The building on the right is the Palazzo
Communale, which is in the Piazza
Grande. Looking rather like the Palazzo
Vecchio in Florence, it was designed by
Michelozzo.
