Getting ready to tile
the roof in September
'06
Having the remains of
this portico in place
meant that obtaining
planning permission for
a replacement was not a
problem.

Internally, a new
staircase has been built
which leads up to a new
gallery, on which there
will be a double bedroom
with its own bathroom.
The interior when the
house was acquired
This means that the open plan ground floor will still have a third of its area
where the ceiling is double height, which will make it appear much more
spacious.
The job completed
The portico creates an
extra "outside" room
and effectively doubles
the area of the ground
floor.  The view, which is
west and south across
the valley, is dramatic.
As with the other
cottage, the barn has a
very separate and
private garden.
The new window
openings facing south
The new galleried floor
sits on chestnut beams.
On the two open sides,
there will be waist height
railings.

The open plan ground
floor will include a small
kitchen set into one
corner with a breakfast
bar facing into the room.
This building is referred to as the tobacco barn, which was its original use -
the harvested leaves were hung on racks in here to dry.  Although two
storeys high,  there was never an upper floor.  The previous owner used it
as an art studio.
As well as cutting a new door onto the portico, windows have been created
in the upper storey, looking out across the valley.
The original door
opening looking
through to the new
door to the portico
As it looks
now
This is the new bathroom window on the north side of the cottage from
inside and outside.  As this faces the main house, the tobacco drying brick
lattice pattern provides additional privacy.

The work done on this tobacco barn is a real transformation and it's going
to be a very smart unit for two people - or a group of children.
