correctly established by Richard Lander (1830).  The routes of all the explorers who had
contributed to the solving of this great mystery are hown, as well as other notes of

An exceptionally large chart drawn for ‘La Compagnie des Indes’ in Paris, showing the
coast of West Africa from Senegal down to Sierra Leone with the courses of the Senegal
and Gambia rivers and some other inland detail.  Very much a working chart which
includes coastal soundings and other navigational details.  A good example of the physical
accuracy stripped of superfluous ornamentation that characterised D’Anville’s work.  
Engraved by Guillame De La Haye.  Slightly soiled and some minor damage.  Published in
Paris.

The Guinea coast from Cape Palmas to Cape Three Points (Axim in Ghana).  A detailed and
interesting little chart of what the Europeans called the Ivory Coast - because of the
prodigious quantities of elephants' tusks that could be obtained there in the 16 & 17th
centuries.  The ivory was considered to be the best in the world.  Because of this, ivory
trading remained more important than trading in slaves until the late 18th century.  From
the Dutch edition of PAM.  Title cartouche and compass rose.

Carte de la Riviere de Kalbar - JN Bellin c.1765.
Bellin included this detailed chart of the entrance to the Calabar river in the PAM with
acknowledgement to its 17th century English origins.  An earlier English version of the
same chart which appears in Churchill’s ‘Voyages’ states; “Drawn very exactly on the spot
in the year 1699 by several pilots jointly”.  In fact its real origins may be even earlier.  An
interesting cartographic curiosity.  From the Dutch edition of PAM, engraved by JV Schley.

chart of the Sierra Leone coast is a smaller chart showing the entrance to the Sherbro
river, an important trading post.  This smaller chart appears to have been taken from

An exact map of ye river Sierra Leone and ye coast from thence to
Sherbro - John Seller c.1750.
A very good example of a small coastal chart from John Seller’s great work ‘The English
Pilot’ the first part of which was published in 1671.  This small size, large scale, chart of
the entrance to the river includes, inset, a small profile view of the mountains behind
Freetown.  Editions of the ‘Pilot’ continued to be published up until 1794.  A most
interesting and attractive chart.

defined than on later, or indeed earlier, charts.  From the Dutch edition of the PAM.  Title

The subtitle to this large detailed map reads ‘Particularly exhibiting the discoveries lately
made to the N.E. of Sierra Leone by surgeon O’Beirne and Major Laing.  Compiled from
original documents in the Colonial Office’.  For a full account of this expedition see EW
Bovill ‘The Niger Explored’.  Bottom right on the map is a table of trade statistics for
Sierra Leone between 1817 and 1825.  Elsewhere the map is extensively annotated with
information on topographical features, tribes, flora and fauna.  Slightly soiled with some
minor tears along fold lines.
A slightly later (5 years)edition of no 30 above.  Some minor differences to this historically
important document, prepared at a time when the colony of Sierra Leone was causing the
British Treasury much anguish.
